US Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is the highest court in the federal judiciary, consisting of nine justices – one Chief Justice and eight Associate Justices. Established by the Constitution, it has ultimate appellate jurisdiction over all federal and state court cases involving constitutional or federal law questions. The court’s primary responsibilities include interpreting the Constitution, resolving disputes between states, and reviewing lower court decisions. Justices are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate, serving lifetime appointments. The court typically accepts 100-150 cases out of over 7,000 petitions annually, focusing on cases with national significance or those that could harmonize conflicting decisions in lower courts. SCOTUS decisions have far-reaching impacts on American society and law.
